Platter 2014 revealed

Earlier this evening, the 34th edition of Platter’s South African wines was launched at the Vineyard Hotel, Cape Town.

First things first: the cover colour, always a matter of much debate and keenly anticipated; this year’s is eau de nile with dark blue foil.

Approximately 7400 wines, brandies and sherry-styles are listed in Platter 2014; of these, 80 wines and 7 brandies have achieved the ultimate five star rating (listed below). This compares with last year’s 62 five star wines.

Notable this year is the number of producers with multiple five star wines; Cederberg, Nederburg and MullineuxFamily Wines gained four each with Mullineux going on to be named Winery of the Year.

This was not too difficult a choice for editor, Philip van Zyl; since Chris and Andrea Mullineux’s first appearance under their own name in the 2010 guide (prior to that they were at the former Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards, now Fable), they have been awarded a total of 11 five star wines, gaining these in every edition bar one.

The White and Red wines of the Year are equally valued; this year’s recipients are DeMorgenzon Maestro White 2012, a chenin-based blend with roussanne, viognier and chardonnay and Newton Johnson’s maiden vintage of their single vineyard, Windansea Pinot Noir 2012.

Eleven wineries received 5 star ratings for the first time, namely Alvi’s Drift Private Cellar, Chateau Naudé Wine Creation, Eikendal Vineyards, Hilton Vineyards, Opstal Estate, Raats Family Wines, Richard Kershaw Wines, Sijnn, Silverthorn Wines, Spioenkop Wines and Windmeul Cooperative Cellar.

Superquaffer of the Year goes to Boland Kelder Five Climates Chenin Blanc 2013.

In a return to the guide, 60 brandies, husk spirits (grappa) have also been reviewed and rated this year. A selection of leading sherry-styles is also included.

Looking at the major winners in the different categories, white blends top the list with 13, followed by shiraz/syrah and chenin blanc with 11 each with red blends and unfortified dessert wines being awarded 7 each.

It needs to be mentioned here that Fleur du Cap Noble Late Harvest 2012 chalks up seven consecutive five stars for this label, an unequalled record. Nederburg Ingenuity White has received one fewer, six consecutive vintages.

Varieties which make a first appearance in the five star line up are Adi Badenhorst’s CWG Auction Reserve Vuilgoed 2012, a grenache gris and Simonsig Estate’s CWG “The Russety One” Roussanne 2012.

This new 2014 edition introduces Jean-Pierre Rossouw as the guide’s new publisher. He takes over from Andrew McDowall, who has been associated with Platter as printer from the 1986 edition, when a member of management at Creda Press, and joint- then sole-publisher since the 1998 edition. As a farewell gift, the Platter team presented McDowall with a water colour cartoon of him in his E-type jaguar, created by well-known local cartoonist, Tony Grogan.

The print version of Platter 2014 will be available from the second half of November at selected bookstores and retail outlets countrywide for a recommended retail price of R169.95. It can also be ordered online at http://www.wineonaplatter.com. The web-based version is available at the same address from today.
